Album review

Graduation

Kanye West
Graduation
Released 2007
Label:Rock-A-Fella, Island Def Jam

This one of a kind album only made by unique rappers like Kanye West was yet again another success. Especially when competing against 50 Cents newest album, Curtis, it is very hard to get a good review. But with Kanye's work it seems like his probability of getting a good review is much higher than the other artists.

When starting off with the first song in the track called "Good Morning" was quite the good choice as if to start off a new day or the start of the album. It takes on a slow beat to sort of warm up the listener and make them bob their head a little but the moment that next song comes up it takes on a much faster tempo. With the next couple of songs he uses lyrics as part of the beats to his song. A good example would be like "Stronger" where it uses the lyrics "Work it, make it, do it, Makes us harder, better, faster, STRONGER!" throughout the whole song and makes sort of a techno beat.

Kanye is also known for using different artists to do his chorus, which he can use very effectively and makes it stand out more then the actual lyrics. This of course is no downfall for the genius here but actually goes for the direct point of the whole song, but still it will make the listener want to hear the lyrics.

But for every album there is always that one wild card and unfortunately there is one in this album. The song Barry Bonds just doesn't seem to be up to par with the rest of the songs. It's beat felt a little uncomfortable and it seemed like the lyrics were forced into the beat. Every song must a good feel to it and this one definitely did not had that good feeling.

I'm glad that you chose to mention how when Kanye samples other people's music in his song, it adds a total other element to his sound and really enhances it. "Stronger" would be absolutely nothing without the Daft Punk refrain in the background, and without Elton John's "ooooh"s, "Good Morning" would have no soul. Also, he totally created a new sort of look with the usage of the Japanese artist Murakami, with the album art and the whole conceptualization as Kanye as a hypermodern, fresh new face.
